Thor: Ragnarok doesn’t hit theaters until November, but the film is already starting to earn its keep if reaction to the film’s first trailer is any indication. Marvel dropped the first teaser for the flick on Monday and the highly anticipated feature logged upwards of 136 million views in its first 24 hours. That set a house record, not just for Marvel, but for parent company Disney – that includes views for Mouse House in-house product, Pixar product as well as the two newest Star Wars entries.
Reaction thus far as been primarily positive as fans got their first glimpse of what director Taika Waititi has up his sleeves for the third standalone Thor entry – which included glimpses of new villain Hela (played by 2-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, making her Marvel debut) and an eagerly anticipated glimpse of a Thor v. The Hulk showdown – played, of course, by Marvel vets Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, respectively. The hope is a revitalization of the Thor flicks, following the somewhat muted reception for the second standalone entry, Thor: The Dark World. As an asset, Waititi comes with a different set of bonafides to his name following the critical and art-house success of his previous directorial achievements What We Do In the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Thor: Ragnarok‘s view count is significant for Disney as it easily bested current blockbuster Beauty and the Beast (which clocked 127 views in its first day), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (112 million views) and Captain America: Civil War (94 million views) – Marvel’s best up until now. It’s not, however, the all-time champ as the spooky teaser for the forthcoming Stephen King adaptation It hit 197 million views on its first day online two weeks ago; The Fate of the Furious also bested Thor: Ragnarok with 139 million views.
Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters on November 3rd.
