‘This Is Spinal Tap’ Follow-Up Begins Production

The sequel to This Is Spinal Tap has reportedly kicked off production. The news comes from production company Castle Rock Entertainment. 

This Is Spinal Tap, released in 1984, follows the band Spinal Tap in a fictionalized series of events as the group goes on tour, followed by a filmmaker seeking to craft a project around the band. 

Director Rob Reiner returns to helm this picture, and will also reprise his role as the filmmaker within the film. As well as This is Spinal Tap and its sequel, Reiner has also directed The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, and Misery, among many others. Misery remains the sole Stephen King adaptation to win an Oscar, going to Kathy Bates for Best Actress. 

Returning to the film are Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer. Joining them this time in cameo roles, according to Deadline, are Elton John, Paul McCartney, Trisha Yearwood, Questlove, and Garth Brooks. 

Reiner stated, “I recently spoke to Marty DiBergi who said that he was more than happy to take a sabbatical from his position as a visiting Professor’s Assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts to once again document Spinal Tap to ensure their place in the pantheon of Rock and Roll.” Reiner is responsible for playing the film counterpart of DiBergi. 

Reiner is producing the film alongside Michele Reiner and Matthew George, with executive producers Derrick Rossi and Jonathan Fuhrman.
