In a shocking move by producer Spyglass, the troubled Scream VII has cast Neve Campbell, star of the original film and its first five sequels. The Hollywood Reporter explains that Campbell’s return is especially surprising, as she had previously declined to appear in last year’s Scream VI due to pay dispute.
Additionally, the franchise’s original creator, Kevin Williamson, has returned to the franchise to direct Scream VII. While this is Williamson’s first time directing for the franchise (whose first four installments were directed by Wes Craven), he is an important part of its legacy as the writer of the original Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4. Guy Busick, who wrote 2022’s Scream (the fifth in the franchise) and Scream VI has taken over writing duties from James Vanderbilt, who is set to direct the upcoming film Nuremberg.
Scream VII has had a tumultuous few months. In November, Spyglass fired star Melissa Barrera (Scream 2022 and Scream VI) from the upcoming sequel after she made Pro-Palestine post on Instagram. The next day, rising star Jenna Ortega was announced to have quit the film. While THR’s sources claimed that Ortega’s departure was unrelated to Barerra’s firing, many speculated that it was a moment of “sisterhood solidarity”. Barrera commented that her co-star is “good egg…She’s good person and we love each other. She would show up for me and I would show up for her no matter what.” In December, director Christopher Landon quit the project calling it “a dream job that turned into a nightmare.”
Neve Campbell announced her return and the updates to the film’s writer and director in a post on Instagram. Scream VII is expected to be released in 2025.
