James Gunn and Peter Safran, who recently took over as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios of the newly formed DC Studios, have reportedly scrapped work on new Wonder Woman film. Patty Jenkins, who directed the first two Wonder Woman films, allegedly presented a treatment to executives at Warner Bros. recently for the third film, also co-written by legendary comics writer Geoff Johns. However, Gunn, Safran, Michael De Luca, and Pamela Abdy, co-chairs and co-CEOs, at Warner Bros., have already informed Jenkins that Warner Bros. will not be moving forward with the project.
The scuttling of the film comes at a turbulent time for Warner Bros. amidst the company’s merger with Discovery and subsequent corporate restructuring. As a result, many projects, such as the already-completed Batgirl and Scooby-Doo films, are being canceled. The company has also enacted cost-cutting measures, including laying off nearly 150 staff from HBO and Warner Bros. TV Studio.
Gunn and Safran plan to meet with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav within the week to pitch their vision for the DC universe. However, questions remain as to whether or not the Snyderverse will still exist moving forward, as well as if the troubled Flash solo film will release.
