The Writers Guild Of America Is Ready To Strike In The Face Of A Possible Disagreement Regarding Their AMTPT Deal

The Writer’s Guild Of America has been in an ongoing process of negotiations regarding their current contract. Every three years a new deal is negotiated to make conditions better for writers. So far, the Guild has not reached an agreement and the current contract is expiring today, May 1st.

In the face of difficulties to reach common ground with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the WGA is preparing for possible strikes and setting picket spots. New York City will be a target for this. Deadline published today some of the possible sites where protesters may be gathering, including NBCU Universal upfront, Radio City Music Hall, Netflix’s upfront, the Paris Theater, Warner Bros. and Discovery’s upfront.

Other potential picket sites are 30 Rock/NBCUniversal, Netflix’s headquarters, and the offices of HBO/Amazon. In Queens: Silvercup Studios and Silvercup East, while in Brooklyn: Steiner Studios and Broadway Stages. The timeframe for WGA East picketing is May 15-17 so far. The Guild notes that the sites are subject to change.

The WGA East will have a membership meeting in New York City this Wednesday to share and discuss the progress they have made so far. The WGA West will also hold a meeting on Wednesday.

The Writer’s Guild of America made a statement on their website regarding the current situation:

“While the WGA Negotiating Committee continues to bargain with the AMPTP , the the goal of reaching a fair deal by tomorrow’s May 1st contract deadline, we need to be ready for a potential strike. The greatest amount of leverage we collectively bring to a strike action is the withdrawal of our labor. Picketing is a key tactic to demonstrate that we are all in this together, and that until a strike is resolved, it’s not business as usual.”
