Throughout the past few days, The Weinstein Company has been figuring out how to act in the face of the allegations of sexual harassment and assault against one of its original creators, Harvey Weinstein. As of now, in addition to the outpour of allegations from actresses, film writers, and employees, Weinstein has also been accused of three instance of rape. While he has been dismissed from his company and booted from the Academy, the allegations have become inextricable from his former company’s reputation. Because of the uncertainty and discourse involved with the company, many filmmakers, actors, and writers have also had to reassess how they proceed with projects with such a newsworthy producer.
One such project impacted by the situation is The Current War, a movie following the historic technological conflict between electricity pioneers like George Westinghouse (played by Michael Shannon); Nikola Tesla (played by Nicholas Hoult); and Thomas Edison (played by Benedict Cumberbatch). Cumberbatch also has a history with The Weinstein Company, performing in The Imitation Game, which told the story of Alan Turing. The film also stars actors Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them); Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Homecoming); and Tuppence Middleton (Jupiter Ascending). Though The Current War was slated for release in November of 2017, Variety reports that it has been delayed and will not air in theaters until 2018.
