Marvel’s newest team is poised to strike. The Thunderbolts* is now playing in theaters, kicking off the first weekend of the summer movie season.
The Thunderbolts* finds Bucky Barnes, US Agent, Yelena Belova, and several other rogues from the MCU. After unknowingly being pitted against each other, they must band together if they have any hope of clearing their names, and any hope of saving the world from a new threat with devastating power.
While last years kickoff to the summer stretch came in under expectations, Thunderbolts* is putting up a strong first outing. The Fall Guy debuted this time last year to $27.7 million, but Thunderbolts* soared past those numbers, looking to land anywhere between $73 to $77 million, after a Friday gross of $31.5 million.
Deadline notes that this is a much more substantial opening when looking at audience reception than the last MCU outing, Captain America: Brave New World. While the reviews for that film are mixed at best (it sports a 5.8 on IMDb), Thunderbolts* has won most audiences over (7.7 on IMDb), and has been stated by some to be one of the best Marvel offerings post-Endgame.
Second place this weekend went to Sinners, yielding the top spot upon its third weekend. After dropping not even 30% from last weekend, Sinners is looking to bring in $33 million come Sundays close.
Third place this weekend goes to A Minecraft Movie, with $13 million. The rest of the top five is rounded out by The Accountant 2 at $9.8 million, and Until Dawn with $3.65 million.
