We may yet see another film where Moses parts the Red Sea as Paramount Pictures has a remake of The Ten Commandments possibly in the works. Disruption Entertainment is handling the project which is currently searching for a writer and director to once again tell the epic Exodus tale for the big screen. This news comes courtesy from an exclusive over at The Tracking Board.
This comes less than year following Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, similarly plotted tale which starred Christian Bale (The Fighter) and Joel Edgerton (Black Mass). That film failed to make much of an impression at the domestic box office (though its global gross was significantly higher) and was besieged by claims of white-washed casting. Such sensitivities loom on the horizon for The Ten Commandments redo, inevitably. The film will center around the Exodus story, where Moses leads the Jewish out of Egypt and away from the oppressive rule of Ramses.
Of course, it was Cecil B. DeMille’s epic 1956 film starring Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner and Anne Baxter that is the most famous cinematic rendering of this often-told story. DeMille’s film- which was also distributed by Paramount- still celebrates an annual Easter-time airing on television and during its time, was the most expensive film in history. The film also earned seven Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture) and won an Oscar for it’s incredible special effects. The film was also DeMille’s last.
Mary Parent and Cale Boyter will serve as producers. Parent previously produced Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, another biblical outing that performed far better at the worldwide box office than domestically. We shall stay tuned for developments.
