The latest trailer for Terminator Genisys from director Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) is loaded with action, characters, and plot twists. Apparently not subscribing to the old adage that “less is more,” Paramount’s newest trailer for the film divulges a lot more of the narrative than previous trailers, while also revealing what is sure to be a central plot element.
Fans will still see a lot of familiar plot points that were teased in the first few trailers, including the reveal of an alternate reality where Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is sent back to save Sarah Conner (Emilia Clarke), only to find she’s already been rescued from a T-800 Terminator (Arnold Scwharzenegger). They’ll also note the expected revelation of the bad, younger T-800 model (digitally resembling a young Scwharzenegger). But this time, the preview exposes perhaps another side to Sarah Conner’s son, John Conner (Jason Clarke), that audiences weren’t expecting.
The latest trailer is sure to divide fans of the franchise, and seems like a bold move from Paramount to draw interest and buzz. Whether it works or not remains to be seen, but the film community and blogosphere is sure to talk about the major reveal within the coming weeks. As of late, the main strategy behind the marketing for the franchise seems to be centered on convincing fans that the story is headed in a completely different direction, with the first trailer for the film blatantly stating as much with a title card declaring, “The rules have been reset.” This most recent preview continues that initiative, drastically changing the dynamic and character arc of John Conner’s fate.
Terminator Genisys will star Emilia Clarke (Dom Hemingway), Arnold Schwarzenegger (Sabotage), Jai Courtney (Insurgent), Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), and Matt Smith (Lost River). The film will hit theaters on July 1st.
