‘The New Mutants’ Release Pushed Back to 2019 and ‘Deadpool 2’ Pushed Forward

Fox is shaking things up with an announcement that will push back the latest X-Men spinoff The New Mutants in order to accommodate other films, including the anticipated Deadpool 2 starring Ryan Reynolds, which will now be out in theaters May 18 rather than June 1. The Hollywood Reporter first released the news. This change puts the Fox film opening just one week prior to Disney’s Solo: A Star War’s Story in hopes to get a leg up on the box office revenue as Star Wars traditionally has held one of the top profits for the first two weeks of the release. However, this is also two weeks after Avengers: Infinity War is released, putting the film smack dab in the middle of a blockbuster box office sandwich.

With this change, the first of the X-Men spinoffs, The New Mutants, won’t be released until ten months later, in February of 2019.  The change, which Fox officials say was due to not wanting both films to compete against each other in the box office, creates a large gap in Fox’s superhero release schedule, especially after already rolling out promotional materials for The New Mutants within the past few months.

And because of New Mutants being released February 22 from its previous April 13 date, Fox has also pushed back its other X-Men film, Gambit, which stars Channing Tatum to a June 7 opening. Fox officials say this change is more beneficial, especially since the studio is on the search for a new director after Gore Verbinski left the project last Thursday. At this point, though, it looks like it may take a Hollywood miracle for Gambit to be made at all. Only time will tell.
