‘The Legend of Zelda’ Movie Films In ‘Lord of the Rings’ Filming Locations

Filming continues for the upcoming The Legend of Zelda movie, with a wrap date set for sometime at the end of this month, putting it on track for its 2027 release. One of the locations the film was recently spotted filming in was Otago, New Zealand, the same location used for the Lord of the Rings movies.

With the region’s varied scenery and architecture, many parts of Otago have proven very versatile for a range of purposes. The expansive natural environments allow for everything from Wild West scenery (as seen in films such as The Power of the Dog and X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and for natural fantasy environments (as seen in The Lord of the Rings movies, and what’s likely the case here with the Legend of Zelda movie).

The upcoming Legend of Zelda movie is being directed by Wes Ball, who directed the Maze Runner series and 2024’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The two leads playing Link and Zelda were announced back in July, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda. A first look image of the two in costume was released back in November.

The Legend of Zelda movie will be released on May 7, 2027, by Nintendo and Sony Pictures.
