Netflix released its official trailer of The Last Thing He Wanted, adapted from a 1996 novel by Joan Didion. The film was directed by Dee Rees, an Academy Award nominee best known for her work on 2017’s Mudbound and stars Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) Ben Affleck (Argo), Rosie Perez (Birds of Prey) and Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse).
The Last Thing He Wanted revolves around the Iran-Contra conflict. When her father (Dafoe) guilts her into running a fool’s errand on his behalf, D.C. journalist Elena McMahon (Hathaway) uses it as a chance to dive into a possible investigative story, but ultimately becomes the very subject that she was attempting to expose. The trailer starts out with a bang, as armed men charge into the newspaper office and force Elena to flee the scene, with fast montages of her packing bags, heading to the airport and jumping into a vehicle. In an office, government official Treat Morrison (Affleck) explains to another official how Elena is the “reporter with a moral compass, always a step ahead.”
Elena finds herself on dangerous ground amidst the Iran-Contra Affair’s arm-for-drugs deal, and realizes the crates that appear throughout the trailer are actually illegal arms shipments. After shown pictures of her father taken at the arms deal, Elena starts to suspect her father’s real purpose for entangling her in the dangerous arms affair. Intense shots of the dangerous investigation ensue with Treat watching her every move and her photojournalist coworker (Perez) worrying about Elena’s safety. The thriller seems to provide slim chances of escaping danger as Elena becomes more and more trapped in her father’s corrupt narrative.
The Last Thing He Wanted will be released in Netflix on February 21, 2020 after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival soon on January 27, 2020. Watch the trailer below:
