Rock legend Dave Grohl’s second feature film just dropped the first trailer to the music documentary What Drives Us. The visually appealing film, produced by Grohl’s Foo Fighters, is essentially a love letter to all musicians who had to tour in the back of their vans.
Ringo Starr, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, St. Vincent, Slash and Duff McKagan from Guns & Roses, U2’s The Edge, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, Exene Cervenka of X, and more make an appearance in Grohl’s doc.
What Drives Us follows young bands RadKey and Starcrawler as they take on the world one town at a time while also hearing stories of the music industry’s greatest artists, remembering the romance and adventure as well as the mayhem and confusion of their own time on the road. The film also examines what it takes to convert a van into a home and how the trade tricks have been passed down over the generations. Before the modern era, musicians had to get the music to the fans one show, one overnight drive, one poorly maintained small club at a time.
“This film is my love letter to every musician that has ever jumped in an old van with their friends and left it all behind for the simple reward of playing music,” explained former Nirvana drummer Grohl. “What started as a project to pull back the curtain on the DIY logistics of stuffing all of your friends and equipment into a small space for months on end eventually turned into an exploration of ‘why?’ What drives us?’”
The film will be released on Friday, April 30, exclusively on the music-focused streaming site accessible via Amazon Prime Video. Those who live outside the United States will also be able to view it on Amazon’s streaming site.
