With 2024 wrapping up, now marks the time that many look back on the year, and its offerings when it comes to the box office. One such metric that many are considering is just how much money the box office itself brought in through the whole year.
For the entire year, 2024 was able to nab itself right around $8.7 billion in the domestic box office.
This year saw a fair number of smash hits at the box office, seemingly coming in waves. June into July saw Inside Out 2 followed by Deadpool & Wolverine. Both films managed to become the highest grossing of 2024, pulling in domestic totals of $652 million and $636 million, respectively.
Come November, two more films put up high numbers, with the back-to-back Thanksgiving duo of Wicked and Moana 2. Wicked came out just before the holiday weekend, with a $437 million total, according to Box Office Mojo. Moana 2 came hot on its ruby heels with $404 million domestically, and still growing. Thrown into the holiday mix, as well, was Gladiator II, which is looking to wind down its run at roughly $170 million.
While there were other hits, like Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, there were stretches of the year that left gaps in terms of revenue. This would end up resulting in 2024 still managing to come up short in comparison to recent years, according to some analysts.
Variety noted that Franchise Entertainment Research head David A. Gross spoke about the type of year that 2024 was. He mentioned there were some strong contenders to put up big numbers, but on the flip side, said “the first four-and-a-half months of the year and the autumn were weak. Dead periods in 2024 left some deep bruises.”
