Indie distributor, The Film Arcade has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the Kris Swanberg (Empire Builder) drama Unexpected. The film stars Colbie Smulders (The Avengers) as a pregnant inner-city Chicago high school teacher who connects with one of her students, who is also pregnant.

Swanberg only has one feature directing credit to her name, the 2012 thriller Empire Builder. She previously co-wrote the mumblecore darling Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007)which her brother Joe Swanberg (Drinking Buddies) directed. It looks as though Unexpected will have a similar tone to her brothers’ work in terms of improvised dialogue and handheld camera work.

The movie first premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival where it competed for the dramatic prize. Smulders also stars in the comedy Results that Magnolia Pictures quickly picked up before it premiered at the festival. Smulders will be seen next in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The Film Arcades’s most notable releases include the comedies Afternoon Delight (2013) and the rom-com parody They Came Together (2014).
