The Exorcist is getting sequel from Blumhouse with David Gordon Green in early talks to direct. The comedic director turned horror has directed a cacophony of films over his career. From the cult classic stoner comedy Pineapple Express to the Nicolas Cage thriller Joe to the recent soft reboot of the Halloween franchise. The credits could not be more different, but after the success of 2018’s Halloween, Green has turned his talents to horror.
The original 1973 film The Exorcist was one of the most successful horror movies of all-time. The horror film gained critical success along with immediately being established as a horror classic. The Exorcist netted ten Oscar nominations, winning best sound and adapted screenplay.
A recent comparison could be to Blumhouse’s own Get Out, which received four Oscar nominations, winning best original screenplay. Both films were nominated for best picture in their respective years. Get Out brought a new twist on horror films, while The Exorcist was one of the first critically acclaimed mainstream horror films.
Though with all its success, the four subsequent sequels never garnered even close to the same amount of acclamation as the original. Seeing as Green made a sequel to only the original Halloween and seeing as the sequels Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends have been completed and announced respectively, and seeing as it all has been successful so far, Blumhouse will attempt to do something similar with The Exorcist.
It will be interesting to see where they go with the franchise though. Unlike Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode, Linda Blair’s Regan MacNeil is not as icon, though her return would be welcomed, one can assume the main returning character would be the infamous demon Pazuzu.
It is also important to note that this is another sequel in a line of soft-reboots of horror franchise. This includes the latest Halloween, Scream, and Hellraiser TV series announced. The list goes on including the latest Candyman and an Alien TV series announced with Noah Hawley attached. Overall, it seems Universal and other studios are not ready to let these iconic horror franchise die just yet.
Either way, it certainly will be interesting to see where Blumhouse and Green go with this franchise. There is not a set release date as of now.
