During a mild post-Thanksgiving weekend, The Croods: A New Age held on to the top spot at the box office, earning $4.4M at just over 2,000 North American Locations. The film made $20.3M since it released on November 25.
The animated comedy sequel stars Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds, and has been dominating quiet box office. In a distant second place was Focus Features’ comedy Half Brothers, which grossed $720,000 at 1,369 locations. Freaky, Universal’s body-swap horror comedy earned a number 3 spot, earning just $460,000 at 1,502 sites.
“After an opening that topped very modest expectations, Croods is naturally remaining the dominant film in a market operating with less than 40% of theaters open currently,” said Box Office Pro chief analyst, Shawn Robbins. “Renewed lockdowns and closures across the country will probably keep exhibition’s hands tied for the remainder for the holidays, even with Wonder Woman 1984 and a few other releases on the horizon to provide open theaters and willing audiences with fresh content.”
Universal and their specialty label, Focus Features, have been more willing to open new titles theatrically because of their deals with AMC and Cinemark theaters to shorten the theatrical window. This allows the studio to release new films on premium video-on-demand within as little as 17 days of their theatrical release, with some of the digital revenues going back to theaters.
