The Critics’ Choice Award Nominations

‘Captain Phillips’ Received six Critics’ Choice Nominations Including Best Picture

The nominations for the 19th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards were announced this morning.  Typically seen an accurate bellwether for where the Oscar may sway, the awards are voted on by members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the largest film critics organization in the country. Its membership features nearly 300 television, radio and online critics.  This year, 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle tied with 13 nominations each, a recurring theme of this years awards season so far, as the same two films co-lead the nomination tally at last week’s Golden Globe nomination announcement, while Gravity scored 10 nominations.

Aside from honoring the usual list of acting, writing and technical mentions, the Critics’ Choice also (now for the second year in a row) bestowes prizes for the best in genre pictures, including Best Action Film, Comedy Film, and Sci-Fi/Horror Film.

Also of note, the BFCA acknowledged Scarlett Johansson vocal work in Spike Jonze’s Her.  The actress received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance as Samantha, the voice of the Siri-like operating system that Joaquin Phoenix’s character falls for in the film.  While it seems apparent that this will likeliest be the closet that Johansson gets to an Oscar nomination for her work, it remains on the most critically lauded turns of the season and one of the very few non-traditional performances to ever get a smidgeon of traction in awards season history.

The awards will be televised on the CW network on January 16, 2014 with talk-show host Aisha Tyler serving as emcee.
