The Russo Brothers are making their return to Marvel Studios for the first time since 2019, set to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Hype has begun to build for the first project, which will be released one year from now, on December 18, 2026.
An interesting approach is underway to market the film, with the Russos posting a countdown to their Instagram signaling the 1 year until release. This will be the duo’s fifth time directing in the MCU, having previously directed: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Interestingly enough, Chris Evans’ Captain America was at the forefront of all of these projects, and we now know the actor will be returning for Avengers: Doomsday. Disney is looking to capitalize on the release and anticipation for Avatar: Fire and Ash by releasing a few small teasers for Doomsday exclusively in theaters in front of the film. The 3rd Avatar film is being released under another Disney subsidiary, 20th Century Studios.
The first teaser is focused on Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, with Variety describing the small glimpse into his life. The last time we saw Steve Rogers was at the end of Endgame, where he appeared as an old man and passed his shield and mantle down to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. We also saw him staying in the past, making the choice to live the life he never got to live with Peggy Carter after returning the infinity stones to the pockets of time the Avengers retrieved them from. We haven’t seen Steve Rogers since 2019, but we have seen Chris Evans in the MCU as he briefly appeared as the Human Torch in Deadpool and Wolverine. Variety’s Jordan Moreau reports that in the new teaser, Steve Rogers has a baby, presumably with Peggy Carter, and can be seen reminiscing about his Captain America gear. We can safely assume this major change in the multiverse will be a major plot point in Avengers Doomsday.
Chris Evans will not be the only major actor returning to Marvel post Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr. will be joining him and starring as Doctor Doom. The last time we saw RDJ in the MCU, Iron Man was face-to-face with Thanos and sacrificed his life to snap the world right in Endgame. The plot for Doomsday is being kept heavily under wraps, but Marvel will be releasing more trailers over the coming weeks exclusively in theaters to highlight more characters. Evans and RDJ will be joined in the film by the other original Avengers trio member, Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, and Pedro Pascal will all also be appearing in the film in their respective MCU roles. Crossing over from Fox’s X-Men universe, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer, and Alan Cumming will also appear.
Be sure to follow along with us at MXDWN as more and more is uncovered in the coming weeks and months, as we are now on a collision course towards Avengers Doomsday.
