According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Black Ball will be competing in the Cannes Film Festival in the U.S. The film is originally a Spanish language movie titled La Bola Negra, but includes staple actors such as Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery) and Penelope Cruz (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Bride!).
The drama musical is directed by Javier Calvo (Holy Camp! La mesías) and Javier Ambrossi (My Dearest Señorita, A Different View), a former couple turned filmmaking duo. The film is inspired by the last poem from Spanish Poet Frederico Garcia Lorca (Yerma, Blood Wedding) focusing on three men in three different stages of life from the periods ranging from 1932, 1937 and 2017. On Thursday, the film received a 20 minute standing ovation after it premiered.
The deal has yet to be closed. Producers of the film Movistar Plus informed The Hollywood Reporter that there is still talk going on regarding closing the deal. La Bola Negra will premiere in October in Spain via Elastica. Co-producer Le Pacte will take care of France’s theatrical debut.
The film stars Close, Cruz, Carlos Gonzáles (Muñeca, La vida breve), Guitarricadelafu (In My Room, Pipe Dream), Lola Dueñas (Volver, The Sea Inside), Lorenzo Zurzoli (Baby, You Can’t Kiss the Bride), Milo Quifes and Miguel Bernardeau (Waves of Crime, Elite). Alberto Gutierrez (A House on Fire, Barcelona Summer Night) is in charge of editing the film. The producers include Ambrossi, Calvo and Jorge Pezzi (The Beloved, Journey to Somewhere).
