According to Deadline, multiple studios are currently eyeing both domestic and international distribution rights at this year’s Cannes Market for the Florence Pugh-led adaptation of The Midnight Library, a film set to be directed by Garth Davis. These Studios include Netflix, Sony, Paramount, and Focus Features. The film is being produced and financed by Studiocanal.
The film is based on the book of the same name by Matt Haig, which follows Nora Seed (who will be played in the film by Pugh), who finds herself trapped in a mysterious library set in a realm between life and death, where she is shown different life paths she could’ve taken. Garth Davis, who previously directed the Oscar-nominated drama Lion, is directing the film, from a script by Laura Wade and We Live in Time screenwriter Nick Payne.
Depending on when a deal can be made with a studio, the plan is to begin Pre-Production on the film in the fall, with principal photography beginning sometime at the start of 2027. Studio Canal is set to distribute the film in certain international markets, such as the U.K, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Benelux, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, with hopes to reach a split between domestic and international markets with whoever ends up distributing the film in domestic and other international markets. The film is also set to be one of the largest budgets for a Studiocanal production, with an estimated budget of around $70 million.
The winner in this distribution battle should be announced in the next couple of days.
