The ‘Backrooms’ Traps Audiences Attention With 81 Million Opening For Fantastic Start

Audiences have happily gotten lost in the labyrinth that is the Backrooms.  Earning 81.4 million for it’s opening weekend, the Backrooms has cemented itself as a chilling horror success not just for the summer, but horror history.

On top of a healthy box office gross, the Backrooms starting initially as an internet analogue horror series has also seen a massive influx of activity and in the fandom that surrounded the series. All of this goes to support the talk of Kane Parsons desire to create a Backrooms franchise, with multiple different entries both big and small. In another win for the internet, Obsession continues its popular streak with 26.4 million and it’s third week taking second place.  The film has leveled up yet again, out grossing both its opening and second weekend totals.

Mandalorian and Grogu continues it’s modest run knitting, a solid 25 million and it’s third week for Disney’s theatrical offerings. The film isn’t in a great spot for Disney, even losing some premium screen to Masters of the Universe this upcoming weekend.  Full moon walked into fourth place this week with 11.7 million and after a 6-week theatrical run, the Breadwinners took 5th place with 7.5 million. The Devil Wears Prada 2 fell down to sixth place with 5.9 million after it’s 5th week in theaters. Fellow newcomer Pressure landed in 7th with 5.75 million, just beating Sheep Detectives by 1 million sliver, with the film bringing home 4.6 million in eighth place in it’s fourth week. Passenger in its second week dropped all the way to 9th with only 2.6 million. Rounding out the top 10 is Mortal Kombat 2 which after decidedly bombing only brought in 2 million in it’s fourth week and is currently sitting at a domestic total of 77.7 million for what was supposed to be a summer blockbuster. Notable inclusion of the list is new indie crime thriller Tuner which brought home 1.7 million in a massive increase as it’s wider release and it’s second week bumps it all the way up to the eleventh.
