The Academy Moves Up Meeting Discussing Sanctions for Will Smith

Following the physical violence exerted by Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars barely a week ago, President of The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences David Rubin scheduled a meeting on April 18th to discuss possible sanctions as a result of the actor’s behavior. As of today, things are on a more accelerated time scale.

The original date was chosen based on the legality that The Academy had to give Smith a 15-day notice before the meeting and the chance to pen a statement from him to the board. Since Smith resigned from the Academy last week, those bars are no longer in place as he is no longer member of The Academy, and because he no longer holds a title within the organization, he can also no longer be expelled or suspended. All of these things amounted to the decision made by Rubin to bump the meeting to this Friday.

The only explanation given to accompany these no longer applicable rules is that “it is in the best interest of all involved for this to be handled in a timely fashion.” These might be the most empathetic words directed towards Smith by anyone in the industry in the last 11 days.

The new meeting is set to take place this Friday, April 8th, at 9 am PT.
