The live blog will begin at 6:30pm (CST)
(6:40PM CST) This past year has been a very difficult one for the movie industry, but fortunately the Academy is able hold the Oscars in person this year. From the few glimpses we were given of it the party appears to be very casual and low-key. Staff member and some people are wearing masks, and it also seems like the pre-ceremony interviews are all being held at a safe 6 feet a part.
(6:54 PM CST) The Oscars will begin in less than 10 minutes. It’s been a weird year for movies, and it’s going to be hard to predict who will win. Last year there was a huge upset when Parasite won and became the first foreign film to win best picture. However the year before that the very controversial Green Book took home the prize for best picture. Many critics were disappointed and they claimed that Green Book was a ‘safe movie’ compared to the much more interesting movies that also came out in 2018. We’ll just have to sit tight and wait and see what happens.
(7:00 PM CST) The show has begun! Once again there is no host. Regina King strolled through Union Station carrying a little Oscar.
(7:02 PM CST) Regina King is kicking off the show. She acknowledged the pandemic and the BLM movement.
(7:06 PM CST) King went around the room introducing the Best Original Screenplay nominees. She’s giving out cute fun facts about each of them.
(7:08 PM CST) Emerald Fennell is the fist winner of the night for Promising Young Woman! Promising Young Woman was made in only 23 days while Fennell was 7 months pregnant. Girl Power!
(7:11 PM CST) The Father wins for best adapted screenplay. It’s based on an amazing play that simulates the horror and sorrow of succumbing Alzheimer’s.
(7:22 PM CST) Laura Dern presents the Oscar best International Feature Film. The title of this category was changed recently. See the Oscars can be progressive, it just takes time. Denmark’s Another Round takes the win! I’m sure every Dane watching this is celebrating with another round!
(7:31 PM CST) Dern is now handing out the award of Best Supporting Actor. For the first time in forever most of the men nominated are people of color. Daniel Kaluuya gets the win for Judas and the Black Messiah!
(7:33 PM CST) This is one of the fastest I’ve ever seen. The ceremony is very parred down and moving at a fast clip. I kind of like the low-key down to earth no frills show, but that’s just me. Should we go back to the way things were or should the Oscars be more like this one?
(7:37 PM CST) Another cool thing I’ve noticed is that none of the presenters have been cut off during their acceptance speeches. I like that. Most of the speeches so far have been really nice and heartfelt.
(7:43 PM CST) Don Cheadle is presenting the award for best hair and make up. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom takes the award. The award is well deserved, because in that movie Viola Davis did not look like Viola Davis. The team really transformed Davis into Ma Rainey.
(7:45 PM CST) The Oscar for best costume goes to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. A two for one for Ma Rainey!
(7:50 PM CST) Meanwhile in the Dolby Theater Brian Cranston hands out the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to the social workers for the MPTF for their work helping senior citizens during the COVID pandemic. This is the first time the award is going to an organization.
(7:56 PM CST) Last year’s winner Bong Joon-ho gives out the award for best directing. Normally the award is given at the end of the night, but this is a very unconventional ceremony. Tonight’s winner is Chloé Zhao! Many people predicted Zhao would win. Zhao is the 2nd woman to win best director and she is the fist woman of Asian descent to win. History is finally being made.
(8:06 PM CST) We are now 1 hour into the Oscars. The winner for the best sound is Sound of Metal. No surprises there.
(8:10 PM CST) Best live action short film is a rather under rated category. Even best animated shorts gets more love. Well more love from me anyway. Two Distance Strangers took the win!
(8:20 PM CST) Now we’ve gotten to the award for best animated short. Like the previous award this category is often over looked. Pixar or Disney often dominates this category but this year If Anything Happens I Love You. This short is very topical. It’s a great short but it can be a heavy watch. The short is about parents dealing with the loss of their daughter who was the victim of a school shooting.
(8:23 PM CST) Up next is the award for best animated feature film. This another category that Pixar and Disney dominate. This year the competition is fierce, but it should come as no surprise that Soul won. Honestly I would have been happy with any of the movies taking home the gold, but I do agree that Soul earned the Oscar.
(8:35 PM CST) We’ve now made it to the documentary categories. The subject matter of all the short documentaries sound very heavy. The winner for best documentary short is Colette. Believe or not tonight is Colette Marin-Catherine’s birthday. Viva la France!
(8:37 PM CST) Now we’ve moved on to best documentary. Many of the feature length documentaries seem to be a lot lighter than the short ones. I had a feeling that the winner is going to be My Octopus Teacher and I was not proven wrong.
(8:50 PM CST) We’re deep in the middle of the Oscars and now we’ve hit the heart of the technical awards. This year the winner for best visual effects is Tenet. That’s not really a surprise. Nolan’s movies are well known for their effects.
(8:55 PM CST) Some people only watch the Oscars to see the acting awards. Well they’re missing out. Anyway the winner for best supporting actress is Youn Yuh-jung for her performance in Minari. She is the first Korean actress to be nominated and win the supporting actress award. Wow a lot of history is being made tonight. English is not Youn Yuh-jung’s first language, but she gave an excellent acceptance speech.
(9:04 PM CST) Mank wins for best production design and for cinematography. Wow two in a row not bad. Cheers to Herman J. Mankiewicz.
(9:19 PM CST) A very confused Harrison Ford gave the award editing. He began his presentation by reading a bad review of Blade Runner to provide humor and highlight the importance of editing. This year’s winner for best film editing is Sound of Metal.
(9:25 PM CST) Another humanitarian award is being given out. The recipient is Tyler Perry. Not only is he a movie star, Tyler Perry had been working on providing during the pandemic.
(9:46 PM CST) Sorry folks we had some technical difficulties but we’re back! I am back in time to see Glenn Close perform the bump!
(9:48 PM CST) How are commercials for everyone? Most of mine have been very movie oriented. Just saw one with Jeff Goldblum being attacked by animals very nice.
(9:51 PM CST) We’ve reached the hardest part of the ceremony the in memoriam. It can be a tough watch and we’ve lost a lot of amazing people this past year. It’s heartbreaking to say that we’ve lost so many people to lest here. May they all Rest In Peace.
(10:00 PM CST) And now we’ve reached the main event of the evening, the award for best picture. This is usually the final award given, but as I’ve said before tonight has been very unconventional. And the winner is Absolute Proof!!!!!

(10:15 PM CST) So thanks to the shake up best actress and best actor are the last awards of the night. Also they switched the presenters. Normally last year’s best actor would present best actress and vice versus, but not this year. Best actress goes to Frances McDormand for Nomadland. I expected that she would win, but I know that the competition was fierce. Best actor went to Anthony Hopkins for The Father. Hopkins previously won for Silence of the Lambs I was expecting that they would award Chadwick Boseman a posthumous award but I guess not. Rest In Peace Boseman.
