The classic 1974 horror film Texas Chainsaw Massacre is officially making another comeback on the big screen. Director duo Ryan and Andy Tohill, best known for their work in 2018 crime thriller The Dig, have recently closed deal with Legendary Pictures to direct the reboot. The directors and writers of Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead, Fede Alvarez and Rodolfo Sayagues, are set to produce the film, with newcomer Chris Thomas Devlin penning the script.
The film that would go on to define the entire slasher genre, Tobe Hooper’s 1974 film Texas Chainsaw Massacre centers around two siblings and three of their friends visiting their grandfather’s grave in Texas, only for them to fall victim to a family of horrific, cannibalistic psychopaths, including the iconic villain Leatherface. The film has been labeled a cult classic, with sequels of Leatherface and retellings like Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013) and Leatherface (2017) continuing the franchise. Hooper’s gore-heavy film also features early performances of soon-to-be stars like Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey.
Not much is known about the plot for this upcoming project. However, slasher franchise fans can definitely expect the gore, violence, and dark humor that helped achieve Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘s place in horror cinema. Alvarez’ recent statement from Variety seems especially promising: “The Tohill’s vision is exactly what the fans want. It’s violent, exciting and so depraved that it will stay with you forever.”
