One way to spend your upcoming Valentine’s Day can be streaming the for-absolutely-free indie drama The Ever After, a passion project of the married actors– now also writers and director– Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) and Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World). The story sees a fictional version of their marriage, one that began in a sweet whirlwind, yet has transitioned into a strained shell of a relationship amidst the pathetic fallacy of artificial Los Angeles lifestyles. The film also features performances by Rosario Dawson (Rent), Phoebe Tonkin (TV’s The Originals) and Melissa Leo (The Figher) as an emotional and psychological guide for Palmer’s desperately troubled character.
The project was partially crowd-funded as well as produced by the film-making couple through Webber’s own Poor Rich Kids company. Consequently, along with being mostly self-funded, the film will also be self-distributed – much like Webber’s directorial debut, The End of Love.
Like most indie filmmakers, Palmer and Webber took advantage of the film festival circuit to showcase their movie – namely last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival, where the movie opened with an emotional bang, leaving nearly no dry eyes in the theater. If you are initially apprehensive at spending your Valentine’s Day watching a bleak love story, tuning in may be worth it just to witness a couple’s fight to save a once strong relationship.
Palmer’s looks set to take off in 2015. She will be starring in the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Choice, the Point Break reboot, and appearing in the impressive Triple Nine ensemble, as well as in Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups with Christian Bale. If you didn’t catch Webber in 2014’s Laggies or Jessabelle, he can next be seen in the punk rock drama Green Room with Patrick Stewart (X-Men), Anton Yelchin (Fright Night), and Imogen Poots (Need for Speed).
