Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, about painters Margaret and Walter Keane (to be played by Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz) is marching forward towards production, with news that Terence Stamp has joined the cast, which includes Adams, Waltz, Jason Schwartzman, and Krysten Ritter. Stamp can be seen in theaters now in a leading role in The Unfinished Song, which hit big screens in the U.S. last week. The actor, whose debut film came back in 1962, is probably best known for his work on the Christopher Reeve Superman movies, where he played General Zod in Superman II, a role taken over by Michael Shannon in the recent reboot, Man of Steel.
In Big Eyes, Stamp will be taking on the role of New York Times art critic John Canaday, a notoriously outspoken critic who opposed Walter’s artistic celebrity (among a slew of others). Little of the plot has been revealed, so it’s unclear how large a presence the caustic Canaday will be.
As we’ve mentioned previously, it would seem that Big Eyes is for Burton something of a return to the kind of movie that made him a rising star in the early ’90s. Certainly, the pieces are there for success; in addition to the stellar cast, Burton is re-teaming with Ed Wood screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karazewski.
