‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Snags a Sequel

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has raked in $65 million this weekend. The success of Jonathan Liebesman’s film has Paramount pushing for a sequel. On June 3, 2016 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 will kick into theaters.

According to Deadline, the president of Paramount’s Film Group, Adam Goodman, this weekend’s success was a delightful surprise.

“The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”

Michael Bay will return as a producer for the sequel. Paramount and Bay have been a powerful duo this summer, considering Transformers: Age of Extinction received $95.7 million opening weekend. The writers of TMNT, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) are on board as scribes for a franchise, but it is not clear whether Liebesman will again direct.

In June 2016, TMNT 2 will compete agains Sony’s animated comedy, Sausage Party, starring Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill. The movie will be released one week after Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse.
