A24 has become a rising powerhouse for indie films, especially in the past year with Robert Egger’s The Lighthouse, Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell and Ari Aster’s Midsommar. The studio’s next upcoming project is an epic fantasy adventure film titled The Green Knight, which stars Dev Patel (star of 2016’s Lion) as Sir Gawain, a member of King Arthur’s Knight of the Round Table. David Lowery is set to direct, having previously worked on Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Old Man & the Gun and A Ghost Story.
Lowery’s version of the haunting mythological tale frames Gawain as a reckless, strong-willed nephew of King Arthur. He goes on a daring quest to confront the Green Knight (Ralph Ineson), a grotesque, emerald-skinned giant and tester of men. Through this risky journey, Gawain must put his bravery, honor, and virtue to test for his whole kingdom as he encounters unexpected challenges and fatal foes.
Alongside Patel and Ineson, The Green Knight also stars Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider), Sarita Choudhury (A Hologram For The King), Sean Harris (Mission Impossible: Fallout), and Katie Dickie (The Witch). The teaser reveals enough of the dark atmosphere and high stakes of Gawain’s mission. He sits regally on a isolated throne as the camera zooms in before lighting up in flames. A wooden pinwheel spinning to narrate the story in front of children is shown throughout the teaser, as montages of Gawain’s quest appear before he faces the Green Knight at the very end.
A24 has set May 29, 2020 as the release date. Take a look at the trailer below:
