Tariffs Reduces US Films Imported To The Chinese Box Office

The tariffs soon to be put in place by US President Donald Trump are soon to take hold of many aspects of American business. Among these is the film industry, which will affect films coming to and going out of the US.

The tariffs themselves will affect many territories outside the US, but one of the countries cropping up the most in the headlines is China. According to recent news, China will be heavily affected by the tariffs, perhaps more than many other territories.

Due to the increase, China will be scaling back the US films that get distributed within the territory. An official statement from the China Film Administration states that they will be scaling back the amount of US-based films that make their way to the Chinese audiences, as well as adopting a more selective nature based on the desire for certain films.

Hollywood Reporter even noted that while a gigantic total of 125% in tariffs is now in effect against China, China returned with increasing tariffs on the US up to 84%.

While also being heavily impacted by the tariffs, China is simultaneously one of the biggest territories when it comes to the market of film. Some of the biggest movies in terms of box office have garnered massive turnouts in China, such as Avatar with $262 million and Avengers: Endgame with a colossal $632 million.

When news of the CFA’s response reached President Donald Trump, he had a very straightforward reaction to it. As Deadline reports, he simply said, “I think I’ve heard worse things.”
