Takashi Yamazaki Sheds Light On Cliffhanger Ending Of ‘Godzilla Minus One’

Following its late 2023 release, Godzilla Minus One became a monster hit with both critics and audiences. Although the ending proved to be a definitive close in most regards, one aspect has left fans debating the significance, with the film’s director even commenting on the mystery.

Director Takashi Yamazaki, who also took up VFX and writing for the film, sheds light on the nature of the ending of Godzilla Minus One, which saw the heroes defeat Godzilla, with the main lead being reunited with his girlfriend, who he thought dead from a previous Godzilla attack.

However, things are not what they seem, with a subtle camera tilt, showing a moving black mark on his girlfriend’s neck.

As ComicBook.com reports, Yamazaki did confirm that the black spot on her neck was directly from Godzilla, with the site even noting that fans theorize it could be Godzilla’s cells, which could lead to Godzilla coming back for a potential sequel.

The topic of Godzilla cells has been broached in previous movies, such as Godzilla Vs Biollante, where Godzilla takes on a mutant plant crossed with Godzilla’s cells and the DNA of a scientist’s dead daughter.

Godzilla also had to fight a doppelgänger of himself in Godzilla Vs Spacegodzilla born from the merging of Godzilla’s cells with a black hole deep in outer space.

While the information confirmed by Yamazaki and the film’s ending hints at Godzilla returning to wreak havoc, no follow-up has been confirmed as of yet.
