James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe is bringing Supergirl to the big screen when Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow flies into theaters in Summer 2026.
Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) and written by Ana Nogueira, this long-awaited film will likely be heavily based on the Supergirl comic mini-series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. Following a relatively dark origin story about the rise of Supergirl, played by House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock, Gunn mentioned that audiences can expect to see a side of Supergirl that we’re not used to.
According to THR, Gunn compared her traumatic upbringing to that of her cousin Superman’s, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, as he explained that we will see, “Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton…who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth. She is much more hard-core…”
Alongside Alcock, who Gunn revealed was actually his ideal actress to portray Supergirl because of her, “edge, grace and authenticity,” the film will also include a star-studded cast featuring David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Jason Momoa.
Krumholtz, who will be portraying Supergirl’s father, took to Instagram shortly after his involvement in the film was announced to share his excitement and gratitude for the role. “Joining the DC Universe is a mindblowing privilege. Representing the symbol of hope in Supergirl as Zor-El is a personal triumph,” his post read.
Shooting for this film began last week in DC’s UK production hub of Leavesden, according to THR. As this project was one of the first features headed by Gunn and Safran, audiences can anticipate a renewed outlook on Supergirl. As King said, “She’s Supergirl and she doesn’t give a #%*# about slings and arrows.”
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters on July 26, 2026.
