The official title for the sequel film to Universal’s Super Mario Bros. Movie has been revealed. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to release in theaters from Universal and Illumination on April 3, 2026.
The film takes its title from Nintendo’s hit video game “Super Mario Galaxy,” which was released in 2007 on the Wii system. The news was announced on Friday during Nintendo Direct, ahead of the 40th anniversary of the original “Super Mario Bros.” game on Sept. 13, 1985.
Nintendo Direct started with a teaser for the animated sequel. It showed Mario sleeping under a tree with Princess Peach’s castle in the distance, surrounded by trees as the camera panned up to the galaxy. There were quick flashes of other animals in the Mushroom Kingdom, including a Monty Mole burrowing underground, Cheep Cheeps swimming, and Toads walking around the castle.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie featured a stacked voice acting cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. All of them will return for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in April 2023, was a box office smash hit and became the most successful video game adaptation by far with a lifetime gross of $1.36 billion. It’s currently the fifth-highest-grossing animated film of all time, trailing behind Ne Zha 2, Inside Out 2, The Lion King and Frozen 2.
The first film followed Mario and Luigi as two Brooklyn plumbers who get transported to the Mushroom Kingdom. Once there, Mario teams up with Princess Peach, Toad and Donkey Kong to save Luigi from the evil Koopa King Bowser.
Besides the Mario world, Nintendo had partnered with Sony Pictures to release a Legend of Zelda film on March 26, 2027, directed by Wes Ball. Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will star as Zelda and Link.
