STX Sued by ‘Sesame Street’ Over ‘The Happytime Murders’ Advertising Strategy

In the moment, the tagline “All Sesame, No Street” used in the first promotional trailer for the upcoming R-rated film The Happytime Murders starring Melissa McCarthy seemed like funny and simple way to intrigue multiple audiences. Unfortunately, the makers of the generations-long and well-loved Sesame Street did not enjoy the line much. The makers of the classic kids’ show are suing STX for bringing a negative light upon their reputable television series.

The film is set to release on August 17, but Sesame Street makers say that the film will cause damage to the show’s brand through its use of blatantly sexual content, drug use and abuse, profane language and content, and misogyny.

This past Friday, the judge working the case suggested that the Sesame Company consider a request for immediate relief, which will be discussed at a hearing scheduled for next week. The company sued this past Thursday in federal court for unspecified damages.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, STX Productions LLC says they are confident in their legal position.
