The results of a study regarding directorial efforts from multiple sides of the industry have been revealed. More specifically, the findings revealed the number of films helmed by women across the last few years.

These findings are continued from an earlier study, carrying over the study of the achievements of women in film, specifically behind the camera.

Variety noted that the criteria picked for analysis specifically include women serving as directors, attending film festivals, as award winners, and as executives.

As for women in the director’s seat, Germany led the findings with roughly 19% of directors being women, while Japan had the lowest of 4.7%. For reference, the films analyzed had to be of feature length and had to have a notable presence at the box office.

Looking specifically at some of the highest-grossing films of all time, Frozen II is the highest film on the list with a woman director, Jennifer Lee, but she split helming duties with Chris Buck. Frozen II sits at the 15th spot ($1.45M)  among the highest grossers, per BoxOfficeMojo, followed by Greta Gerwig’s Barbie ($1.44M) at 16.

Shifting to film festivals, the study looked at the last ten years’ worth of fests. Roughly 28% of the works featured at fests were directed by women, with the data showing that Sundance has the most prominent number of female directors, with about 35%.

As for award winners, the findings revealed that roughly 15% of Best Director nominees are women across the past decade. Most recently, Coralie Fargeat was nominated for helming The Substance at the Oscars, while the film was also nominated for Best Picture, where roughly 27% of those considered were women.

The numbers for those in executive roles behind the camera were more even than the other categories. Variety stated that the three territories examined were the US, UK, and France, with an average of 44% of executives being women.
