At this weekend’s domestic box office, Street Fighter opened at number one, while the Katie Holmes documentary You Can See Everything opened to near record-breaking numbers.
Street Fighter, based on the popular Capcom video game franchise, opened with $31 million from 3,575 North American theaters. The film is the first film released under a multi-film deal between Paramount and Legendary Pictures.
The biggest surprise, however, came from A24’s You Can See Everything. The documentary, co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, follows Fielder and a documentary crew as they document Holmes and her family in the 34 days leading up to her 11-year prison sentence. The film opened with a $15 million domestic box office total, which was the second-best domestic opening for a non-music documentary, right behind 2004’s Fahrenheit 9/11. The total likely comes from the rave reviews the film has received since its surprise premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. The film currently stands at a near-perfect Certified Fresh 99% on Rotten Tomatoes.
At Number 3 in the top 5 of this weekend’s domestic box office was Universal’s Other Mommy, which, in its second weekend, grossed $8.3 million, bringing its current domestic total to $44 million. Number 4 was Whalefall, another new release this weekend, which opened at only $8 million domestically. At number 5 is yet another new release this weekend, Sense and Sensibility. The Jane Austin adaptation directed by Georgia Oakley and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles grossed $7.2 million domestically.
All of these films are currently playing in theaters.
