After winning Best Variety Series at this year’s Emmy Awards alongside his team, Stephen Colbert spoke with several journalists backstage to update them on the upcoming Lord of the Rings film he’s co-writing. Colbert was first asked what his next step on the project is, aside from writing, and the writer and comedian insisted that was what kept him busiest.
“That’s what I’m doing,” Colbert told the journalists backstage. “That takes a lot of time, man. You ever written a Lord of the Rings movie? It’s a full-time job.”
Colbert then explained exactly what he’s been doing as part of the project. Here’s his full explanation:
“Literally, I woke up in New Zealand yesterday. I flew here for the Emmys. Yesterday, [when I was in] New Zealand [it was] was tomorrow there. I went from yesterday to tomorrow, so I don’t know how many days today has been. What did I say in my speech? I was hallucinating up there.”
Colbert was first announced as co-writer on this project in March, when it was announced as one of two upcoming Lord of the Rings projects in the works. Colbert is co-writing the film with his son, Peter McGee, and screenwriter Philippa Boyens. Other details about the film are still unknown.
