The latest film adaptation of Animal Farm is set to include a star-studded cast. Andy Serkis, best known for roles like Gollum in Lord of the Rings and Caesar in Planet of the Apes, will direct the animated feature.
Serkis has wanted to direct the film based on George Orwell’s allegorical satirical political novel for over a decade. Nick Stoller (The Muppets, Bros) penned the screenplay adaptation about a group of farm animals who rebel against their owners, only to encounter a whole new host of problems with authority and totalitarianism.
Seth Rogen will play the lead, a pig named Napoleon. The Superbad actor is no stranger to voice roles. He produced, co-wrote, and voiced the lead in his 2016 adult animated comedy, Sausage Party, which grossed $140 million against a budget of $19 million. Rogen used his distinct voice for parts in Shrek the Third, Horton Hears a Who!, and Kung Fu Panda, amongst many others.
Additional distinguished voice cast members include: Gaten Matarazzo (The Angry Birds Movie 2), Steve Buscemi (Monsters Inc.), Glenn Close (101 Dalmatians), Laverne Cox (Inventing Anna), Kieran Culkin (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off), Woody Harrelson (The Electric State), Jim Parsons (Home), Kathleen Turner (Who Framed Roger Rabbit), and Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel). Serkis has an acting role as well.
Aniventure and Imaginarium are producing with Adam Nagle, Dave Rosenbaum, Jonathan Cavendish, and Serkis. Harrelson and Matt Reeves are executive producers.
The film does not have an official release date, but is expected to be released sometime this year.
