Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine reveals his lofty plans to combine films and video games to create a new experience. He even claimed that the recent Call of Duty trailer was “better than anything Spielberg’s ever done.”
Korine elaborated on this dream in an interview with GQ about his new production company Edglrd (pronounced Edgelord). Currently, the company is working on new technology to develop new forms of films and video games, even going as far as to try to combine the two.

They are currently developing an upcoming project AGGRO DR1FT with rapper Travis Scott and Jordi Mollá attached to it. The film follows Mollá as the “world’s greatest assassin” watched over by a horned demon. According to the GQ interview, the film is shot with “the blurry red-yellow-green palette of thermal imaging” and mimics a frenetic video game cutscene. In his interview, Korine describes the aesthetic as “gamecore” and wants to explore the possibilities of creating new entertainment through “the whole idea of entertainment, of live-action gaming.”
When asked if he would return to traditional filmmaking, Korine revealed that he was willing to work on a screenplay by Terrence Malick. He called it a beautiful script that matched his longtime respect for Malick’s work. At the same time, he admitted that he would have difficulty going back to filmmaking since he felt it was too restrictive.
Even then, the hard part now is just the idea of looking through a viewfinder and filming, like, people speaking at a table. All this dialogue always gets in the way. All these things that you don’t care about. – Korine laments.
Either way, it seems as if film is on a brand new path to keep up with changing tastes from a younger generation, and Korine wants to stay ahead of the game.
AGGRO DR1FT is set to premiere on September 2 at the 80th Venice International Film Festival.
