The slate for the 2015 New York Film Festival’s Spotlight on Documentaries series has been announced, and it includes a wide spectrum of subjects in both long form feature length and and short form episodics from an acclaimed body of filmmakers.
Chief among the entries is a preview of Asylum, director Laura Poitras’ follow-up to her Oscar winning Citizenfour. Asylum is an episodic documentary following WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange as he publishes classified documents online and then seeks asylum at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Asylum will preview with other selections of Poitras’ short works as part of “Field of Vision: New Episodic Nonfiction.”
Also featured at the festival will be Frederick Wiseman’s (National Gallery) new film In Jackson Heights. The director’s 40th feature documentary is a slice of life of the vibrant Queens, New York neighborhood, one of the most diverse in the city, aiming to capture the textures of the many divergent cultures who call that part of the city home.
Other notable entries are the world premiere of Everything is Copy, Jacob Bernstein’s loving and funny tribute to his late mother, writer and filmmaker Nora Ephron (Julie and Julia), and Rebel Citizen, Pamela Yates’ recounting of the history and impact of her mentor, legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler.
