‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Returns to No. 1 in Weekend Box Office Charts

Spiderman: No Way Home dethroned Scream to reclaim the top spot in the domestic box office charts. In its sixth weekend of release, Sony’s blockbuster raked in $14.1 million from 3,705 North American theaters, squeezing past the slasher flick’s $12.2 million from 3,666 North American theaters.

However, this defeat is not a bad omen for Scream‘s future, as it grossed $34 million on opening weekend. The horror movie cost a mere $25 million to produce and has made an impressive $51.3 million since its Martin Luther King Jr. weekend debut.

It is a rare feat for a film to secure the No.1 spot on its sixth weekend, but Spiderman: No Way Home did not have much competition. This weekend saw two new nationwide releases, Universal’s faith-based romantic drama Redeeming Love and Gravitas Venture’s fantasy, The King’s Daughter. Both films faced searing reviews and dismal opening weekends, with Redeeming Love earning $3.7 million nationwide and The King’s Daughter scraping together $750,000.

It seems as though Spiderman: No Way Home is in a race with itself and 2009’s Avatar. Back in 2019, Avengers: Endgame, after a re-release, managed to dethrone Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time. Can Spidey do the same and become the third highest-grossing movie in North America?

It can earn another $40.1 million, a difficult feat, though it is possible, especially with a President’s Day weekend boost.

In the following weeks, Spiderman: No Way Home will face Lionsgate’s sci-fi adventure Moonfall and Paramount’s Jackass Forever.
