Spider-Man: No Way Home is owning the domestic box office! News recently broke on Saturday that Spider-Man: No Way Home took over as the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, beating out Avengers: Infinity War (2018) which earned $678.8 million.
Now, just a couple of days later, it is officially the fourth highest-grossing domestic box office film of all time dethroning Black Panther (2018) that grossed $700 million domestically. Spider-Man: No Way Home is officially at $702 million domestically. It is only a couple more spots closer to officially overthrowing Avengers: End Game (2019), which earned an astounding $858.3 million. There is only one film that stands between Spider-Man: No Way Home taking home the bronze, though, and that is Avatar (2009). Taking Avatars’ place would be just the icing on the cake for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
Jon Watts Spider-Man trilogy concluded in December, but its box office statistics have continued to rise since then. It beat the record for the highest-grossing picture during the pandemic just a few weeks after its premiere. It is now regarded as one of the finest films in cinema history, beating out films such as Titanic (1997), The Avengers (2012), The Dark Knight (2008), and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017). If Spider-Man: No Way Home wants to be No. 1 at the worldwide box office, it has quite a bit of a way to go with only $1.6 billion globally and Avatar at $2.8 billion globally.
Though still far behind Avengers: Endgame (2019), the newest multiverse Spidey adventure propelled the franchise to new and unexpected heights, especially when compared to the first film in Tom Holland’s trilogy as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), which only earned $334 million making it the 65th highest-grossing film in the domestic box office. The second film in the trilogy, Spider-Man: Far from Home, didn’t do much better than the 41st highest-grossing film.
Beating out Black Panther is just one of the roadblocks that Spider-Man: No Way Home has bulldozed right over. Better watch out Avatar because Spider-Man: No Way Home is coming for that spot.
