Spider-Man: No Way Home is undoubtedly the most anticipated film of the year. And as everyone knows, with great expectations come great prediction numbers. Tom Holland’s third installment as the web-slinging superhero has had an outstanding opening Wednesday overseas with $43.6 million and is projected to do even better in the US.
It is safe to say that Sony / Marvel’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will at the very least break the pandemic-era record and be the first movie since 2019 to generate over $100 million on its debut weekend alone. In recent months the movie trailers gave some insight into the film’s convoluted story. Most importantly, the trailers revealed that the film that will be heavily populated with classic villains such as Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, and Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock. The return of five villains from previous franchises has built up so much hype and momentum over the past year that when tickets went on pre-sale it crashed multiple ticket websites. It has already broken the record of most sold pre-sale tickets in various countries like Spain, Germany, Mexico, and Brasil. All the anticipation had previously led to massive domestic box office projections for its opening weekend, ranging from $190 to $250 million.
Sony is now being humble and projecting the film’s opening weekend to only generate around $130 million, most likely due to the fact that the pandemic continues to infect moviegoers with uncertainty and indecision. But all modesty aside, Spider-Man: No Way Home is most likely going to swing above the $200 million range on its premiere, given its overwhelmingly positive reception all around the world. According to Deadline, the film has set a pandemic-era opening weekend record in Korea. Yesterday it became the most profitable opening day in the UK with $10.1 million, besting James Bond: No Time To Die. Also on Wednesday, it became the biggest-ever debut of any movie in Mexico with $9 million. In France, the film topped films such as Avengers: Infinity War with a debut of $4.3 million.
The domestic box office forecast for Spider-Man: No Way Home is shaping out to be amazing. It won’t reach the incredible $357.12 million of Avengers: Endgame, but Spidey fans may have to wait until next week to see the movie since tickets might already be sold out for this weekend.
