‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2′ Officially Begins Production

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2 has finally started production, according to the film’s lead animator Nick Kondo.

Kondo posted the news on his Twitter account, which confirmed that the film was started production after the production’s initial delays. Production was initially delayed due to the coronavirus, so fans will have to wait a little longer to see the movie.

Sony Pictures pushed back the film’s release date from its original date of April 2022 to October 7, 2020, a decision that, like many other studios since March, has been done to accommodate social distancing precautions. Now that America is slowly shedding all of the shelter in place orders, people have been able to return to work.

The original film followed Miles Morales, a young kid from Brooklyn who receives spider-powers and eventually discovering that there are different versions of Spider-Man in every dimension. After Kingpin activates a portal device under Brooklyn, five versions of these Spider-men, women and pigs appear and must work together to get back home. This includes Miles, who must learn to take “a leap of faith” and learn to master his newfound powers.

The original Into the Spider-Verse was a surprise hit with critics and audiences, receiving praise for its performances, story and unique visual style. It went on to win an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film. There has been no official word on the sequel’s plot, but it will likely involve Morales’s growing relationship with Spider-Woman, i.e. an alternate version of Gwen Stacy with spider-powers.
