Lucasfilm is moving forward with the next installment in the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: Episode X. The studio selected Jon Watts, who notably directed the first three Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, to helm the project. The script will be penned by Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Mr. & Mrs. Smith).
Jon Watts has worked on Star Wars before, as he co-created the Disney+ series Skeleton Crew starring Jude Law. Simon Kindberg is also no stranger to the franchise, co-creating the Disney XD animated series Star Wars Rebels. He has reportedly been working on a new trilogy since 2018, with Daisy Ridley’s Rey expected to play a significant role in the trilogy. Apparently, the proposed trilogy has not yet been greenlit by Disney, the parent company of Lucasfilm.
The sequel trilogy (Episodes VII, VIII and IX) was created shortly after Disney bought out Lucasfilm, with those films being directed by JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson. Since then, Disney has produced a slew of Star Wars series for Disney+, as well as the theatrically released The Mandalorian & Grogu earlier this year. Their next film is Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy.
