Sony announced last week that the sequel to the universally loved Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been delayed from October 7, 2022, to June 2, 2023. The announcement also noted that the title had dropped the ‘Part One’ from its name to simply be Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The film will still be the first part of two, and according to a report from Comicbook.com, producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller announced at a CinemaCon panel this week that the second part title will now be Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
On stage at CinemaCon, Lord said, “We had to try and break new ground, so it’s way bigger. The number of characters [is massive]. The first movie has 40. This one has 240 characters.” The pair also mentioned that the film has a crew of over 1,000 people and is the biggest animated film crew to date. They also revealed that the film begins on Spider-Gwen’s (Hailee Steinfeld) Earth-65 before continuing onto Earth-1610, where Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) lives.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson with a script penned by Miller, Phil Lord, and David Callaham. The film will again star Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jake Johnson, along with Oscar Isaac and Issa Rae, and will open in theaters next summer on June 2, 2023. For now, any more details on the second part are scarce, but the film is set to release on March 29, 2024.
