Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has succeeded early at the box office. Like the rest of the Spider-Man franchise, its success has been unsurprising. It is estimated to make more than Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The Spider-Man series has taken many different looks and approaches. Three other universes follow Toby Maguires’s Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield’s, and more recently, Tom Holland’s Sony and Marvel Spider-Man. Holland’s Spider-Man was first introduced in Captain America: Civil War. Eventually, Holland had his own movies for the hero: Spider-Man: HomecomingSpider-Man Far From Homethen Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Sony initially decided to let Spider-Man be used in Marvel movies centered mainly on Holland’s character. This is very different from previous Spider-Man universes, something that Sony has done right with remakes and sequels.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is no different. The first film eventually reached $190 million in North America and globally reaching $384 million. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has already hit $120 million at the box office and made $208 million globally. This is unsurprising given that the most recent Spider-man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, made $814 million in North America and globally $1.9 billion.

Into the Spider-Verse series follows Miles Morales, an African American and Puerto Rican Brooklyn teen, who was bit by a radioactive spider. The series was given a fresh storytelling opportunity, which sets it apart from other sequels and remakes that come off as cash grabs, from being formulaic to shot-for-shot remakes. The series offers a new perspective on Spider-Man in an animated format. Spider-Man has been Sony’s best-selling character, unlike their other Marvel characters, such as Venom and Morbius.

Across the Spider-Verse is estimated to hit $4 billion in the summer. Imax will be the supporting screen for Across the Spider-Verse, and since tickets are a higher price, it adds 20% to the film’s total gross. So far, Imax accounts for $13.5 million in North America and globally $20 million. Before Across the Spider-Verse was released, the third film, Beyond the Spider-Verse, was announced for 2024, which will follow a female lead.
