Over the past weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day Officially Hit $2 billion at the worldwide box office. With that milestone, the film became the highest-grossing Spider-Man film and the highest-grossing Sony Pictures film, surpassing Spider-Man: No Way Home, the previous record holder in both categories. It also became the second-fastest film to reach $2 billion worldwide, behind Avengers: Endgame.
In addition to these milestones, the film also had the second-best third weekend at the domestic box office. Making $70 million domestically, the film fell behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made $90.2 million in its third weekend in late 2015.
Brand New Day’s milestone performance comes alongside lukewarm openings for this weekend’s new releases. The End of Oak Street, David Robert Mitchell’s dino-centered Sci-fi film starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, has an estimated budget of around $80 million and opened at $21 million domestically and $26 million internationally, for a total worldwide opening gross of approximately $47 million. This week’s other dino-centric new release, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, has an estimated budget of only $39.5 million and opened at $20.5 million domestically and $48.5 million internationally, for a total worldwide opening gross of around $73 million.
This weekend’s domestic box office puts the summer total at $4.24 billion. This makes this summer the second-best summer box office, just behind 2013’s total of $4.755 billion.
