Sony Stops All Business in Russia, Blocks Video Release of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Variety has reported on Sony stopping all business in Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine. On Thursday, February 24, 2022, Russia invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine. Many countries, including the United States, have imposed sanctions on Ukraine in response to this act of war. Western companies have been following suit by halting business in Russia.

Sony is one of the companies that has severed business with Russia. The Sony film Morbius was not released in theaters in Russia two weeks ago. The anime streaming service Crunchyroll, which is owned by Sony, has suspended all operations in Russia. Spider-Man: No Way Home will also not be getting a home video or television distribution release within Russia.

Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra stated “We stand with many businesses around the world who have now paused their business operations in Russia, and in support of the humanitarian efforts currently underway in Ukraine and the surrounding region.” Sony has donated $2 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the international NGO Save the Children. Both of these organizations are providing support for the Ukranian people.

Other media companies that have cut off all business with Russia include Amazon, Disney, Netflix, WarnerMedia, Paramount, and Universal. These companies join dozens of others in this attempt to cripple Russia’s economy in response to this act of war. In the modern world the ability to participate in a global economy is integral to the success of a country. These economic consequences serve as a deterrent to violent acts of aggression and promote global peace.
