Writer-director Lorene Scafaria’s The Meddler, which will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, will be released theatrically in North America by Sony Pictures Classics. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, on the other hand, had already acquired the film prior to the start of its production and will distribute internationally.
This is Scafaria’s second feature film; she wrote and directed Seeking a Friend for the End of the World in 2012. She had previously written 2008’s Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.
The film follows a recent widow, played by Susan Sarandon (Tammy, Robot & Frank) as she relocates from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter, played by Rose Byrne (Spy). Rounding out the cast are J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Cecily Strong (TV’s Saturday Night Live), Jerrod Carmichael (Neighbors), and Michael McKean (Whatever Works).
